Admission

MA programme

Applicants should have a good, relevant honours degree for admission as a MA candidate. Successful candidates will undertake research in a chosen field of study under the guidance of supervisors, fulfill modular requirements and submit a thesis for examination.

MA candidates are required to read and pass 2 modules:

  • JS5101 Reading in Japanese Studies I
  • JS5102 Reading in Japanese Studies II

before they can proceed to research. Please refer to Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences module information, Japanese Studies for modules descriptions.

From Academic Year 2004-05 onwards, MA candidates are required to read and pass 4 modules.

Proficiency in the Japanese language is expected although this requirement may be waived if the research can be done without the use of Japanese language materials.

PhD programme

Applicants should have a relevant master degree for admission as a PhD candidate. Successful candidates will undertake research in a chosen field of study under the guidance of supervisors, fulfill modular requirements and submit a thesis for examination.

PhD candidates are required to read and pass 4 modules:

  • JS6101 Reading in Japanese History & Society
  • JS6102 Reading in Japanese Politics & Economics
  • JS6103 Reading in Japanese Literature & Culture
  • JS6104 Reading in Japanese Linguistics

Candidates also have to pass a PhD qualifying examination before they can proceed to research. Please refer to Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences module information, Japanese Studies for modules descriptions.
