

The Department of Japanese Studies invites applications from qualified candidates for the MA and PhD postgraduate programmes.
MA and PhD dissertations can be written either in English (preferably) or Japanese. A MA thesis should not exceed 40,000 words if written in English, and 100,000 characters if written in Japanese. A PhD thesis should not exceed 80,000 words if written in English, and 200,000 characters if written in Japanese.
MA and PhD programmes (by research) are offered on a part-time and full-time basis. The minimum and maximum periods of full-time and part-time MA candidature are 1 and 3 years while that of PhD candidature are 2 and 5 years respectively.
Graduate students can apply for NUS research scholarships as well as conference grants. The University offers attractive bond-free research scholarships which provide full-time MA and PhD candidates with a monthly stipend of S$1,500 and a full research subsidy. The Japan Foundation and Sanwa Bank Foundation also offer scholarships and grants for students who wish to pursue some form of graduate training and study in Japan.
