

Founded in 1981, the Department of Japanese Studies in the National University of Singapore is one of the largest Japanese Studies departments in the Asia-Pacific region. With an approximate student enrolment of over 1000 in recent years, the Department is staffed by 11 full-time academics and 2 part-time language instructors. The mission of the Department is to excel in teaching and research, nurture in students an understanding of Japan, in service of country and society.

The University and Department also have good Japanese resource collections totaling more than 26,000 books in Japanese, 175 periodicals and numerous audio-visual materials. Currently, a small but growing number of graduate students are working towards their degrees.
The Department of Japanese Studies offers a broad-based undergraduate programme leading to the degrees of BA and BA (Hons) in Japanese Studies.
The department also invites applications from qualified candidates for the MA and PhD postgraduate programmes.
